Those who have followed my previous entries in the “Oil Journey” series know that I ultimately chose Shell Helix Ultra X 5W-30 (referred to as HUX530). Today, I’m sharing my experience after driving 7,500 km with this oil, compared against the baseline of the Mercedes-Benz genuine oil MB 229.5 5W-40 (referred to as MB540):

• Warm-up Time The warm-up time with HUX530 is significantly shorter. The lower viscosity at 40°C allows the oil to reach operating temperatures and circulate much faster.

• Idle Quietness Idle vibrations and engine noise are noticeably quieter than with MB540. This was unexpected since higher viscosity oils are usually quieter, but it may be attributed to Shell’s proprietary GTL (Gas-to-Liquid) “secret formula.”

• Acceleration Response (Revving Smoothness) Thanks to the SAE 30 viscosity, the engine revs much faster than with MB540. This is particularly noticeable on the highway when downshifting (e.g., from 8th to 7th gear) to overtake, where the response feels much sharper.

• Coasting Distance The coasting distance is remarkably long due to very low internal engine resistance. Engine braking is almost non-existent.

• Degradation and Consumption Even after 7,500 km, the quietness and performance remain unchanged. A dipstick check confirms that oil levels haven’t decreased, indicating excellent stability and low volatility.

Conclusion

Compared to the genuine Mercedes-Benz oil, HUX530 is a clear winner, providing a significant and immediate upgrade in driving feel.

As of 2026, Shell has officially updated this series to the API SQ standard globally—which offers even stricter protection against timing chain wear and LSPI—though the API SP version is still the most common in the Taiwan market. Nevertheless, it remains the most suitable oil I’ve found for the W205 that meets the high-performance criteria of SAE 30, MB 229.5, API SP/SQ, and Group 3+. I will continue to use it, and as the SQ version becomes more widely available, the engine protection will only get better.
