Selection Background

In recent years, our family has gradually upgraded to GreenRun lithium-iron batteries. Whether in terms of driving experience or battery life performance, we have been quite satisfied. The original International CAOS blue lead-acid battery installed on this SENTRA began showing signs of degradation after more than three years of use, so we decided to take the opportunity to upgrade it to a lithium-iron battery.

However, the selection of Japanese-spec lithium iron phosphate batteries available in Taiwan is limited; most products come from individual sellers or manufacturers with unclear factory information. Although there are numerous 12V lithium iron phosphate brands in China, some suffer from falsely declared capacities and poor workmanship. After extensive comparison, we ultimately chose Houny (弘毅), primarily for the following reasons:

  • Formerly a Nokia mobile battery OEM manufacturer, with deep technical expertise.
  • Currently, in addition to producing its own brand of automotive starting batteries, it also manufactures energy storage batteries for European and American brands under contract manufacturing (OEM).
  • Rated by Chinese netizens as a legitimate brand with excellent reputation.
  • Online teardown videos, such as those available at this Facebook reel, demonstrate superior internal craftsmanship; safety has also been verified through rigorous destructive testing (see this video).
  • Recently, a distributor in Taiwan has introduced the product; if purchased directly from the factory in China, it comes with a three-year warranty.

Due to the deeper discharge depth of capacity (DoD), lithium iron phosphate batteries offer an actual usable capacity that is 1.6 times greater than lead-acid batteries; thus, a 50Ah LiFePO4 battery is equivalent to an 80Ah lead-acid battery and provides ample power.

This time, I asked a friend in China to purchase the battery for me. Upon receiving it, I unexpectedly discovered that the terminal size does not match, which was overlooked during the initial inspection:

  • Batteries used in the Chinese market are predominantly equipped with large terminals (19.5/17.9mm).
  • Japanese cars from Taiwan (such as SENTRA) typically use small terminals (14.7/13mm).

Although this brand also offers a small plug version, since I had already bought the wrong one, I was forced to purchase an all-copper large-to-small adapter instead. As a result, installation had to be delayed by another week.

Installation Process

Finally, today’s replacement was completed using an OBD memory saver for a power-off-free installation.

Preliminary impressions are as follows:

  • Build Quality: The packaging is secure, and the battery’s exterior finish is refined.
  • Voltage Performance: After installation, the BMS (Battery Management System) reaches standby voltage more quickly than before.
  • Startup Response: The vehicle’s startup response is noticeably sharper compared to a three-year-old Isuzu Blue Electric model.
  • Durability: Whether it can achieve durability comparable to Taiwan-based GreenRun, remains to be seen over time.

After six months of use:

Friends and family stated that while there were occasional instances of gear shifting getting stuck in the past, since switching to a lithium-ion battery, this has not happened again for over six months.
